Why sustainability is important…

…because the damage is often irreversible.  Because it’s easy to destroy and impossible to undo. mannahatta[1]

I hate the term ‘global warming’, which has politicised the entire issue of sustainable living.  That is what it’s about. Lets leave the planet the way we found it (or better yet, lets improve it further) so future generations can enjoy it as well.  Forget climate change. Forget global warming.  Lets focus on not messing it up for our children.

What is this “before and after” picture of New York doing in a Milton Blog?  Well, look at all the construction right on the Niagara Escarpment.  Milton Education Village will actually be built West of Tremaine.

This is part of the reason why I am a broken record on actually calling Milton an ‘Escarpment Community’ so perhaps we can make it look like one.  Think about what stood on our concrete parks: lush green farmland.  Mature trees before that.  This is why I keep arguing for more trees in the town.

Trees don’t just improve the air quality and aesthetics.  Properly planned trees actually create a perception of narrow roads and control speeding.  Have you ever been to the Wal-Mart or Canadian Tire lately?  Their parking lots are complete concrete parks.

Check out National Geographic’s article on what Manhattan looked like before we turned it into a concrete park.  And Manhattan, with its Central Park, is actually a better planned than most other Urban Centres.

What Milton desperately needs is a long-term Urban Plan that puts Milton on a sustainable path.  One that not only gives Milton a unique identity among other GTA cities, but actually turns Milton into a true Escarpment Community that it should be.
